Food Science is a practical approach to science through the study of food. This is a one or two semester course that you can enter any semester. Each unit includes a science lab and a practical application food lab. The course exposes students to the many career opportunities in Food Science and technology. Food Science includes safety and sanitation, the scientific method, lab equipment, scientific evaluation of food, basic science for food scientists, acids & bases, chemical leavening in baked goods and energy. Projects include hunger in the community and family leadership |

In general: |
Students complete competencies, study reproduction, prenatal development, birth and development through the age of five. This class teaches parenting skills and provides a background in human development. Practical experience is obtained through participation in the Maria Montessori Language and Cultural Center lab on campus. This is the first Tech Prep course in a series of two that allows students to be eligible for five college credits in Human Development at North Seattle Community College. Students work on S.T.A.R.S certification which provides demonstrations of work force skill standards related to working in a licensed childcare facility. |

The student completes competencies begun in Child Development 1 in the Maria Montessori Language and Cultural Center lab under the mentorship of the center’s director. Students implement curriculum to individualize the education of the children and develop core knowledge related to working in a childcare center. The students are trained to be job ready. |

In general: |
The students learn to become better clothing consumers as well as learning valuable sewing techniques. The students make samples, small projects, a quilted pillow, unisex pants. A wardrobe plan and a final project are based on the skills attained. Garments are serged as well as sewn. Students are encouraged to alter basic patterns with their own designs. The career focus for this course is fashion and textile design, clothing as art, alternations and sewing for profit. Basic cost of participation is $15.00 for materials that the students choose for themselves. |

Advanced students work on perfecting their skills and completions of their portfolio. Students are encouraged to serve the community for instance creating costumes for drama or making projects for the Montessori Lab School at Ballard. They create their own design line in the form of a storyboard and may produce a garment of their own design along with at least one other major project. Internships can be set up for more experience. |
