FEBRUARY MUSIC DEPARTMENT MEETING: Tuesday, February 14, 7:00 pm in the music room. We will be focussing on the Jazz Gala as this is our next big fundraiser of the year to keep our great program going! See you there! Door prizes and goodies to celebrate the new year.

THE SPAGHETTI DINNER was a big success! Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to help make it a success. Weren't the music groups great?! See pictures in "Photos" section.

MUSIC MATTERS LICENSE PLATES: At the spaghetti dinner, Ginny Gray came to speak to us about an important on-going fundraiser to keep music education in the schools, Music Matters license plates. Please download the attached document Special License Plate Application to get your license plate. If you still have questions, feel free to contact Ginny. CONCERT CHOIR/ORCHESTRA SPRING TRIP TO L.A.: The first payment of $200 was due by November 10th. The second and final payment is due by February 6, 2012. Families can send the money in for the trip in installments if they would like to spread out the payments. We just need the total in by February 6, 2012.

MONTHLY MUSIC PARENT MEETINGS: Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend the monthly Music Parent Meetings - the 2nd Tuesday of the month (unless otherwise noted). The monthly Music Parent Meetings provide an opportunity for communication and planning, an important way for the teachers to coordinate events with the parents, give parents an opportunity to connect with other parents, be informed about their student's activities within the BHS Music Department, and be kept up-to-date with the many events on the music calendar. CONGRATULATIONS to John Adolphsen, Max Golub, Ruben Lesnick and Frances Steelquist who participated in the Northwest High School Honor Band held this past weekend at Pacific Lutheran University. These BHS Musicians performed with approximately 250 other high school band students and learned music in a day and a half to perform a concert Saturday evening, January 7th. Their directors were Dr. Tim Robblee of Northwestern University and Dr. Robert Taylor of the University of British Columbia.

Congratulations to the Ballard High School Concert Choir and Treble Choir -conducted by Courtney Rowley - and the Ballard High School String Orchestra - conducted by Michael James - for their successful performances at the Vancouver Heritage Music Festival over Memorial Day weekend. Each group received a Gold Rating (over 90 points out of 100) from each of the nine judges and the Music Department won the Festival Sweepstakes Award for having the highest scores out of all schools in attendance. Schools from California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alberta competed in the festival. Several Group and Individual Awards were also received, including:
  Concert Choir- Gold Rating and 2nd Place in the 3A Concert Choir Division
  Treble Choir - Gold Rating and 2nd Place in the 3A Women's Choir Division
  Orchestra - Gold Rating and 1st Place in the 3A String Orchestra Division
  Orchestra - Adjudicators Award
  Orchestra - Best Overall Orchestra
  Orchestra - Maestro Award to violin soloist Eva Gaertner-Johnston
